Keep in mind that Python 3 is going to treat your whole script as unicode by default, therefore using this flag would be redundant. See the "a" flag to limit matches to ASCII characters only. Python 2 requires this flag to turn on unicode support.

In the example below, the first alternate matched "a", and the second one matched "bc", however once it bumped into "X" none of the alternatives resulted in a match. Therefore the engine cannot return the next "a" as a match because "X" is not the last location where a match occurred.
